Sanding Wooden Floors

Inspection and Assessment

Before any sanding begins, we conduct a thorough assessment of the wooden floor to identify areas of wear, deep scratches, stains, or previous damage. This step ensures we choose the correct sanding approach, products, and finish for each floor type.

Preparation of the Work Area
We meticulously clear the room of furniture, fixtures, and obstacles. Dust barriers and protective coverings are installed to minimise the spread of dust and debris during the sanding process. Electrical outlets and skirting boards are carefully masked to prevent damage.

Initial Coarse Sanding
We begin with coarse-grit sandpaper to remove old finishes, scratches, and uneven surfaces. Using a professional drum or orbital sander, we ensure even material removal while maintaining the wood's natural grain. This step is crucial for achieving a uniform and level surface.

Intermediate Sanding
Next, we transition to medium-grit sandpaper, refining the surface and eliminating any marks left from the initial sanding. This step prepares the wood for the final sanding, smoothing out imperfections and enhancing the natural texture.

Fine Sanding and Detailing
For the final sanding, fine-grit sandpaper is used to produce a silky-smooth finish. All corners, edges, and hard-to-reach areas are hand-sanded to ensure consistency throughout the entire floor. This attention to detail ensures that the wood is perfectly prepared for staining or sealing.

Cleaning and Dust Removal
We employ industrial-grade vacuums and tack cloths to remove all sanding dust from the floor. This step is critical for a flawless application of the finishing products, preventing uneven staining or bubbling.

Staining (Optional)
If a colour change or enhancement is desired, we apply a high-quality wood stain. Our products are carefully selected to ensure long-lasting colour and even application, highlighting the natural grain and character of the wood.

Sealing and Finishing
Finally, the floor is sealed with premium wood finishes, including water-based or oil-based varnishes, providing maximum protection against wear, moisture, and UV damage. Multiple coats are applied with professional techniques to ensure durability and a flawless sheen.

Sanding Techniques for Different Types of Wooden Floors

Solid Hardwood Floors

Solid hardwood floors, such as oak, maple, or ash, are durable but require careful sanding to avoid gouging. We use progressive grit sanding and monitor moisture content to prevent warping or cupping.

Engineered Wood Floors

Engineered wood combines a hardwood veneer with a plywood base. We limit sanding depth to avoid exposing the softer core layers while maintaining the surface's natural beauty.

Softwood Floors

Softwoods like pine are prone to dents and scratches. Our team applies a gentle sanding technique and specialised finishing products to enhance durability without compromising the wood’s character.

Parquet Flooring

Parquet patterns require precise sanding to maintain alignment and aesthetic design. We use smaller sanding tools for detailed sections, ensuring each block is level and smooth.

Exotic Woods

Exotic hardwoods such as mahogany, teak, or walnut demand expert handling. We use appropriate abrasives and stains to maintain the wood’s natural oils and rich tones while providing long-lasting protection.
